Feeding everyone costs more in July

Hey friend,

Every summer, I forget this part.

Everyone’s outside more.

The snacks disappear faster.

And the berries, sandwiches, muffins, leftovers and “quick” meals don’t last nearly as long as I think they will.

Yet somehow, even with the garden growing and the pantry stocked, the grocery bill still starts creeping up.

That’s when I know it’s time for a reset.

Not a big dramatic one.

Just a simple look at what we already have, what we can stretch, and what we need to stop buying because we can make it ourselves.

This is Part 1 of my July series, The Summer Stock-Up.

Because summer isn’t just for camping, gardening and hanging laundry on the line.

It’s also one of the best times to build a more self-reliant kitchen, one small habit at a time.

Here’s the part I keep coming back to.

Feeding a family from scratch doesn’t mean every meal looks pretty. It means you know how to turn basic food into enough food.

That might mean cooking a big pot of rice and beans.

It might mean baking muffins before the kids ask for snacks.

It might mean using potatoes, rice, oats, eggs, garden greens or whatever’s sitting in the back of the pantry.

And it might mean having one or two good kitchen tools that make from-scratch cooking easier when you’re tired.

If your cast iron works as hard as your pantry does (affiliate link), Culina Cooks has cast iron care items to help keep those pans clean, seasoned and ready for the next meal.

I tested the Culina Supreme Cast Iron Care Set last summer, and the products really worked, especially the Cast Iron Soap.

This week, I’m focusing on three things.

  1. I’m checking the pantry before I shop.
  2. I’m planning meals around what needs using up.
  3. And I’m choosing one thing to make instead of buy.

Nothing fancy. Just steady.

If you’re feeling the grocery pinch too, start here.

You don’t have to overhaul the whole kitchen this week.

Just pick one meal, one pantry shelf or one habit.

That’s enough to start.

P.S. Next Tuesday, I’ll be talking about preserving before the harvest gets away from you. This is where the jars, labels and notes start to matter.
