🥒 Before August disappears

Hey Reader

This last weekend of August always feels like a bit of a handoff.

The garden is still very much in summer mode, but September is sitting there on the calendar with cooler evenings, busier routines and all those little jobs we meant to get to before fall.

So today’s reads are a little of both.

Double Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

If zucchini is still multiplying on your counter, this is my newest recipe over at Recipes From Leftovers.

These muffins use two cups of grated zucchini, plenty of chocolate and ingredients you probably already have in the pantry. They freeze well too, so you don’t have to eat all twelve this weekend.

My Autumn Off Grid Reading List

Once the evenings start getting cooler, I find myself reaching for books again.

This year’s list includes off-grid living, home preserving, wilderness navigation and survival skills. There are five books here, including a couple I’d use for hands-on family learning.

Free meat. Every box. For a YEAR.

25 Timeless Tips for Frugal Living

Before buying more stuff for fall, this is a good time to look at what you already have and what you can make, reuse or grow instead.

This roundup includes 25 practical ideas, from saving seeds and making household basics to repurposing materials and growing more of your own food.

You definitely don’t need to try all 25.

Pick one idea that saves you money or makes you a little more self-reliant this fall.

That’s enough for one weekend.

Use up a zucchini, find something good to read and pick one small thing to get ready for September.

Until next time,

Hey Reader September is National Preparedness Month, so now's a good reminder to take another look at preparedness. And I don’t mean filling a shopping cart with survival gear or worrying about every possible disaster. The boring stuff matters first. Do you have food your family will actually eat? Could you manage through a power outage? Does everyone in the house know what to do if you can’t reach each other? That’s where I’d start. Survival Preparedness for Beginners If preparedness feels...
